Type II geriatric odontoid fractures are increasingly common as the elderly population continues to grow. Optimal treatment for this clinical problem is elusive, as many of these patients have multiple co-morbidities, including dementia. Surgical indications are not standardized, due to the lack of well-controlled trials. However, several recently published studies have favored surgical intervention, citing higher rates of fusion and better outcomes.1-4
