That the Sanandaj–Sirjan arc (SSA) is a Jurassic continental arc is deeply ingrained in the literature of the geology of Iran (e.g. Berberian and Berberian, 1981; Hassanzadeh and Wernicke, 2016 and references therein). The central SSA is characterized by voluminous calc‐alkaline arc magmatism of Jurassic age. However, recent reports of OIB‐type alkaline igneous rocks from the Ghorveh region (Azizi et al ., 2015, Azizi et al ., 2018), situated in the northwest of the SSA, led Azizi and Stern (2019) in Terra Nova, 31(5), 415‐423 to suggest that the rocks of the entire central SSA have been formed through a plume‐related continental rift and not a magmatic arc.
