Segmentation of tibia femoral bone using graph cut method and 3D rendering for FEA

Development of a 3D model of tibia femoral bone is very important for diagnosis and treatment. Knee pain is most commonly observed problem in old age people and it is a very complex joint. Hence analysis of knee joint is very essential. Analysis can be done using 3D model and finite element model. Physical and mechanical properties of knee joint can be analyzed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technique. To develop 3D model segmentation process plays an important role which extracts the Region of Interest (ROI) or foreground from background image. This paper presents the graph cut method to segment tibia femoral bone from MRI/CT knee images. Also proposed algorithm illustrates the removal noise using median filter, graph cut method is used for segmenting tibia and femur bones. For volume rendering 3D model of a tibia femoral bone is created using segmented images. Finally finite element meshing is done on 3D model of tibia femoral bone to develop meshed model. This meshed model can be used for analysis and pre surgical planning of knee joint.
