While I was the president of the Teratology Society in 1985, there was a discussion about the Society writing a position statement on the lack of teratogenesis of Bendectin, a drug used for the treatment of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. I was opposed to our first statement being about a drug for which there was an ongoing litigation. During that time, we had no established procedures. I thought we should take on something that there would be an easy consensus to work out how such policy should be directed. I was aware of how the American Academy of Pediatrics developed its policy statements and tried to duplicate those procedures for Teratology. So, we did a statement on the role of vitamin A in causing birth defects. Since then, these processes have served the Society well.

I initiated the Warkany lecture. The first one was by Professor Bengt Källén of Sweden. I was later honored to give the lecture during the year Dr. José Cordero was president of the Society.
