Classification of the Calculation Methods of the Configuration Factors of Diffuse Radiation

Abstract

This article presents the results of generalizing the existing methods for determining the diffuse radiation configuration factors for the radiation transfer calculation in the zone model of the system of bodies with complex-shaped surfaces. Such problems arise in determining construction temperatures, surface illumination, and construction of realistic images in various fields of science and technology: space, illumination engineering, civil engineering, power engineering, applied optics, computer graphics, etc. The classification of methods for determining CFs by the sources of computational errors is proposed. Four classes of methods are distinguished: exact, special, numerical integration, and combined methods. The methods are ranged into classes. The basic formulas and the formulas for numerically determining the CFs are given. The derived classification allows users and developers of the CFs’ calculation software to gain an understanding in the variety of methods and to select those methods that are most suitable for solving their problem. This classification may be used as a basis of the generalized algorithm and software complex for computing diffuse CFs for a wide variety of problems.
