Airway remodeling in asthma is characterized by the presence of increased airway smooth muscle (ASM), increased mucus producing cells (submucosal mucous glands and epithelial goblet cells), and subepithelial fibrosis (deposition of collagen and extracellular matrix proteins) which all contribute to increased airway wall thickness.
