Acute renal damage is the most frequent toxic reaction induced by parenteral administration of iodinated contrast media (ICM), leading to a condition named contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). This pathology was described by Bartels et al. in 1954 and, in most cases, it is transient and does not imply any relevant modifications of renal function. However, it is related to an increase in morbidity and mortality, being considered the third cause of acute renal failure in hospitalized patients.
