A review of methods of random surface topography modeling

Abstract Generation of surface topography is important. Thanks to it, functional properties of machined elements can be predicted. It leads to reductions in cost and time of experimental investigations. In this paper, methods of random surface topography modeling are reviewed. Methods of generation of surface topographies of Gaussian and non-Gaussian height probability distribution are shown. The particular attention is paid to modeling two-process random surfaces. In the final part of this paper, tribological applications of random surface modeling are shown.
