Influence of thermal boundary conditions on heat and mass transfer during horizontal directional crystallization

Abstract We present the results of the experimental study on heat and mass transfer in horizontal directional crystallization of high-melting oxide compounds. We considered the case of heating of the rear part of the growth container by means of the heater radiation through the slot in the platform of the container. It is established that such heating causes significant changes of mass transfer in the central part of the liquid layer. As a result, a stable structure is formed that ensures the flow of liquid from the back of the container to the crystallization front. A more effective mixing of the melt and a more advantageous shape of the crystallization front is achieved. The results of the model experiments were checked and proved by the growth process of chrysoberyl crystals doped by the chromium oxide.
