Development of plastic scintillators containing a phosphor with aggregation-induced emission properties

Abstract In this work, plastic scintillators containing organic phosphors with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties were developed. Among the various organic phosphors having AIE properties, 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethylene (TPE) was used in this study. Analysis of the scintillation properties of the scintillators containing different TPE concentrations was performed. It was found that the photoluminescence quantum yields had little dependence on TPE concentration. The light yields of the samples were evaluated by comparing the position of the Compton edge in their pulse-height spectra. The Compton edge was observed at similar channels for the plastic scintillators having 0.50, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 mol% TPE. This indicates that the light yields of these samples did not significantly change, even at high TPE concentrations. All of the samples showed nanosecond decay and did not have long-tail scintillation decay curves.
