Minerals of the Fe–Ni–Co–Cu–S System in Picrite Intrusions of the Southern Urals: Signatures of Liquation and Differentiation of the Sulfide Melt

Abstract New data on the minerals of the Fe–Ni–Co–Cu–S system in the differentiated intrusions of the Southern Urals are presented. Based on a detailed study of parageneses and associations of sulfide minerals, it was revealed that nickel enters the composition of two early formed phases (olivine and pentlandite) during melt differentiation, which leads to nickel “deficiency” and crystallization of cobalt (Co-bearing) minerals in late differentiates of the sulfide melt associated with gabbroids. Liquation isolations found in the rocks of the Misaelga complex, composed of unidentified phases, as well as the studied paragenetic intergrowths/exsolution structures, indicate that the sulfide melt had a multicomponent (Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn) composition, crystallization of which in the local volume led to the formation of “intermediate” phases. It is shown that the onset of sulfide formation in the rocks of the Misaelga complex was realized in a magma chamber.
