Performance of quadruplex module tensegrities using new pin-jointed connections

Abstract This paper concerns a new fabrication method and experimental studies for tensegrity systems. Numerous studies have observed fabrications of the tensegrity systems, however, full-scale tests under load control are rarely reported. In this work, we first develop a form-finding method to draw the equilibrium status with the corresponding force density parameters; a genetic algorithm is then used to yield a single integral feasible set of force densities. Based on the form-finding results, a single quadruplex module tensegrity and 4-quadruplex module tensegrity grid are made. We describe the production process, measuring natural frequencies and the practical implementation of uniformly compressed the structures by using a UTM (Universal Testing Machine). Finally We observe the mechanical response and failure aspects of the 4-quadruplex module tensegrity grid.
