Effect of high temperature on the corrosion behavior and passive film composition of 316 L stainless steel in high H2S-containing environments

Abstract The effect of high temperature on the corrosion behaviour and passive film composition of 316 L stainless steel in high H2S-containing environments was investigated. The results showed that high temperature promoted the formation of thicker but more defective passive film. The dominant composition of passive films converted from Fe, Cr to Ni, Fe as the temperature increased from 30 °C to 130 °C, due to the decreased stability of Cr at high temperature. Besides, high temperature led to the higher content of sulfides in the passive film, attributed to the enhanced adsorption of S species.
