The spin suppression of EM modulation instability in magnetized plasmas

The spin effects on the modulation instability of electromagnetic wave propagating in magnetized quantum plasmas are examined theoretically based on the sidebands analysis. The nonlinear dispersion relation and the growth rate of the instability are derived. The effects of the pump wave’s frequency on the growth rate are analyzed. Results show that in magnetized plasmas, the separation of spin-up and spin-down electrons caused by the spin ponderomotive force will result in the suppression of modulation instability. Numerical results show that this suppression is more important for high-frequency wave than for low-frequency wave.
