Effect of processing techniques on the properties of SrAl12O19/ZTA composites

Abstract This study investigated the densification behaviour and mechanical properties of SrAl12O19/zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) composites prepared by two different forming methods, namely, uniaxial pressing and cold isostatic pressing (CIP). The compatibility of hexaaluminate with alumina makes them the most effective second phase, which strengthening the alumina-based matrices. In both techniques, SrAl12O19 was formed in situ. According to our previous study, the effective mass percentage of strontium hexaaluminate that affects the mechanical properties was 10 and 30 mass % hence, in the present study strontium hexaaluminate mass% studied was 10 and 30 mass%. We investigated the densification properties, phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties in order to correlate the material properties with the forming technique. The study concluded that CIP increased the densification and mechanical properties of 30 mass% SrAl12O19/ZTA composites, among which the fracture toughness enhancement was particularly substantial. The present research results nominate strontium hexaaluminate/ZTA composite containing 10 and 30 mass% SrAl12O19 composites to be used in the cutting tools field.
