Synthesis of Potassium Polytitanates Modified in Melts in the System TiO 2 – KOH – KH 2 PO 4 and the Tribological Properties of the Obtained Products

Abstract

It was shown that quasi-amorphous potassium polytitanate polyphosphate particles with a layered structure and high antifriction properties can be synthesized by treatment of a titanium dioxide powder in melts in the KOH–KH2PO4 system. At a certain ratio between the components in the reaction mixture, one can obtain the product with a minimum content of crystalline phases. The particles of the obtained X-ray amorphous product have a layered structure similar to that of potassium polytitanate synthesized in melts in the system TiO2–KOH–KNO3 but are characterized by a high content of phosphorus, which improves the tribological characteristics of the material. It was detected that, at [KH2PO4] > [TiO2], in the reaction mixture, a secondary crystalline phase K2Ti2(PO4)3 forms, which enhances the antiscuff properties of lubricants produced based on the obtained products, but reduces their antifriction properties.
