Durable Tools for Friction Stir Welding of High-Temperature Airplane-Engine Components

Abstract Experimental data are presented regarding the creation of effective friction stir welding tools. A design concept for a friction stir welding tool and the corresponding attachment is proposed, taking account of the constraints associated with the workpieces; the system consisting of the machine tool, the attachment, the tool, and the workpieces; and the requirements on tool life. The tool life is investigated in friction stir welding of high-temperature materials in airplane-engine components.
