A hierarchical composite adsorbent of cotton fibers modified with a hydrogel incorporating a metal organic framework and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide for the extraction and enrichment of phthalate esters

Abstract A hierarchical microcomposite adsorbent was fabricated to extract phthalate esters in beverages. MIL-101 metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) were incorporated into alginate hydrogel to be coated on cotton fibers. The adsorbent fibers were packed into a pipette tip and used to enrich phthalate esters. To obtain the best extraction performance, short analysis time and less solvent consumption, affecting parameters, including type of adsorbent, the amount of MIL-101 and CTAB used in adsorbent preparation, the amount of adsorbent, ionic strength, sample pH, sample volume and desorption solvent type and its volume were evaluated. Under the optimized conditions, good linearity was obtained from 0.5 to 200 μg L−1 with a detection limit of 0.15 μg L−1. Satisfactory recoveries of five phthalates were achieved in the range of 85.2–97.8% with acceptable RSDs below 5%. The developed microcomposite adsorbent is simple to operate, robust and accurate and could be applied as an alternative adsorbent to extract phthalate esters and less polar toxic organic compounds in various sample matrices.
