On 12 December 1975, Eastman Kodak engineer Steven Sasson thought he was ready to snap his first digital picture. His portable camera was a prototype that he'd built to test the imaging capabilities of a Fairchild Semiconductor 100-by-100-pixel charge-coupled device. The prototype used a repurposed movie camera lens and recorded the image onto audio tape. It ran on 16 AA batteries, weighed 3.6 kilograms, and was about the size of a toaster. Joy Marshall, a lab technician and the subject of that first photograph, took one look at the image and said, "Needs work."
