Cu–Pd Dinuclear Complexes with Earth-Abundant Cu Photosensitizer: Synthesis and Photopolymerization

A series of new palladium complexes containing a Cu(I) photosensitizing unit were synthesized in good yields by the reaction of [(bpm)Pd(CH3)(solv.)]+ (bpm = 2,2′-bipyrimidine) complex with Cu(I) precursors. One of the Cu–Pd dinuclear complexes was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and showed sterically congested Cu center. The Cu–Pd complexes catalyzed styrene polymerization under visible-light irradiation to furnish polystyrenes via a nonradical mechanism.
