A Study of the “Needle” and “Bell” Discharge Burning Modes in a 1.5-kW Hall Thruster

Abstract

Two discharge burning modes (“needle” and “bell”) have been experimentally studied for a Hall thruster with a nominal power of 1.5 kW. The integral parameters of the thruster operation (thrust and specific thrust impulse) are measured in the two stable discharge burning modes. Investigations have been carried out for discharge voltages of 300–800 V and gas flow rates of 1.5–3 mg/s. The results obtained are compared with the data of similar experiments for a geometrically similar thruster with a larger discharge-channel diameter.
