Modern rotating electric machines of all types-induction, synchronous, and direct current-are a complex arrangement of interrelated electrical and mechanical systems and components. The machines are powerful, prevalent, and robust. They represent an expensive investment, especially when situated in critical portions of an industrial process. Although this article examines methods for investigating the the health and well-being of the rotating components of a synchronous machine, the basic concepts and methods can be applied with some modification to other machine types as well.
