Foundations of optical diagnostics in low-temperature plasmas

An ever-increasing amount of diagnostics is available to study plasma and obtain quantities like atomic and molecular densities, ion and electron densities, temperature of electrons and heavy particles, and their velocities, to just name a few. In this paper we will focus on optical-based diagnostics that have been introduced in the field of plasma physics. The basic principles of the diagnostics will be explained and some examples will be discussed where these techniques were successfully applied. For a more comprehensive understanding of the techniques the reader will be referred to textbooks.
