First frost at Lakkasuo mire (photo credit: Heli Juottonen). Among their mosses and sedges, boreal peatlands conceal large spatial variation of greenhouse gas production. Juottonen’s paper “Disentangling the effects of methanogen community and environment on peatland greenhouse gas production by a reciprocal transplant experiment” (Funct Ecol. 2020; 34: 1268–1279, https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2435.13536) looks at whether differences in methane production between peatlands can be linked to their microbial community, or whether environmental conditions such as acidity play the major role.
