As I compose this editorial, many histotechnology colleagues, NSH members, reviewers and authors are dealing with the impact of the SARS-CoV – 2 pandemic on their work and private lives. Hopefully, this highly infectious disease has waned by the time this issue is printed and never seen again. A huge thank goes to Tony Henwood for his ‘Disinfection in Histopathology’ found in this issue. This article is one of the fastest publications in JOH from submission to the final open-access paper. Due to the seriousness of this coronavirus, many journals and publishers, including our publisher Taylor and Francis, granted free/open access to CoV-2 publications. This was done to rapidly disseminate information on guidelines for handling CoV-2 infected specimens [1,2] provide pathology reports and basic ongoing research [3] to combat the disease. Tony Henwood’s timely and now well-received article will inform and help histotechnicians and other histopathology staff maintain a safe working environment during and beyond this pandemic. This issue has a very international feel with articles from authors in Australia, Turkey, Brazil, Poland and Romania. Oguz and his group presented an interesting study on a fish species from Lake Van in Turkey, one of the largest salt lakes in the world. The fish, infected with a gill parasite, have economic importance as a food source in that region and the study was done using routine staining and an immunohistochemistry to assess this parasite. One novel study used of natural wood product for staining connective tissues. Pereria and colleagues found a pigment extracted from eucalyptus wood developed a stain for collagen fibers and compared their results to hematoxylin and eosin and Masson’s trichrome methods. We must always remember that themost important, common dye used in histopathology laboratories, hematoxylin, came from a wood extract. Laboratories worldwide continue to explore natural plant products containing pigments and develop special stains for different tissue elements as compared to what is routinely used in the USA and other countries. Another novel way of staining mitochondria other than using an immunochemistry assaynot always available to some laboratories was presented by Ruxanda and workers to detect apoptotic hepatocytes. Mitochondria, being extremely small and difficult to see with a light microscope, were visible microscopically after using this unique special stainingmethod. It would be a rare issue without a paper on an immunohistochemical assay (IHC) to aid in clinical diagnosis of some disease. The article by the Woźniak group from Poland studied the role of osteopontin on the pathogenesis of various renal cell carcinomas with microarrays prepared from archived paraffin tissue blocks, Western blot analysis and IHC.Hopefully, this groupwill continue their research on this topic with a follow up paper for JOH. I end with a sad note on the passing of Cheryl Crowder, a JOH Editorial Board member, a skilled, knowledgeable reviewer and author of JOH publications. Cheryl was a mentor and teacher who freely shared a vast histology background in the veterinary field especially on marine and fresh water species, and a pioneer of microwave histotechniques. Her service to JOH and our profession will be missed, but most of all the personal loss of a good friend.
