Microfiber coating for flow control: Effects on microfiber length in orientation control

Bioinspired devices have been studied for their use in passive flow control. A hair-structure microfiber coating is studied as one such bio-inspired device. Key parameters of the microfiber coating are its length and the orientation of the hair structure. The relationship between length and angle of these fibers in a coating created through electrostatic flocking is studied herein. It is found that over 60 % of microfibers can be controlled to be aligned within 60° to 90° of the azimuthal angle regardless of microfiber length.
