Abstract The need for nonfunctional contact pads at internal layers of multilayer printed circuit boards (PCB) is still under discussion. Published papers argue on both sides of the issue [1–4]. In the present work, various perspectives regarding the utility of nonfunctional contact pads in electronic systems of different types are analyzed.
