Follow-the-leader is one of the fundamental behaviors in bicycle traffic that describes the longitudinal interactions between two consecutive bicycles. It plays a predominant role in the development of micro-simulation models, safety evaluation and the capacity estimation of bicycle infrastructure. To understand bicycle-following movements, previous studies have either adopted car-following models or developed specialized bicycle-following models. However, these models have not been calibrated and validated in a unified configuration using empirical data consisting of realistic cycling behaviors.
