On 18 August 2019, the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) lost part of its history when Barbara Hibbs Blake (Fig. 1) died after a series of strokes that started only days after the 2019 annual ASM meeting. Barbara was born on 6 August 1937 in Roseburg, Oregon and grew up in Portland. Although her father was Gordon Hibbs, she was raised by her mother Marybelle and her stepfather Lawrence Ramsby. Marybelle was a nurse, and Larry was a ship captain in the Merchant Marines. Barbara was married to Anthony Blake for 56 years. In addition to Tony, she is survived by daughters Virginia and Elizabeth Blake, as well as three granddaughters (Jessica, Hope, and Alysia), and a large extended family. Barbara was stricken during the family’s annual visit to Cape Cod and passed away in Massachusetts. Sadly, her cherished dog Buddy died just a few months later.
