Invasive aquatic plants perform better in niches more similar to their parents
When arriving in novel environments, propagules experience new conditions that can affect their fitness. Gillard et al. grew plants of an invasive macrophyte, Ludwigia peploides subsp. montevidensis, from seeds sourced from three climatic regions in a common garden experiment. Populations from geographically distant and climatically distinct regions had the most distinct fitness responses. Populations from the third source region, geographically closer to one region but climatically closer to the other, exhibited intermediate responses. Indeed, population sites belonging to the same climate type did not systematically have more similar environmental niches. The more similar the environment in the source region is to the newly invaded region, the better invasive macrophytes grown from seeds perform under these new conditions.
