Masson pine (Pinus massoniana) is an important tree species of high economic value in southern China; however, between 2016 and 2018, the damping-off disease caused the death of whole Masson pine seedlings in Duyun, Guizhou Province, China. To improve the control and management of the disease, we identified symptoms and characterized the morphology, taxonomy and pathogenicity of the pathogens causing damping-off disease in P. massoniana in China. Infected seedlings exhibited needle yellowing and blight, extensive peeling and rot to the roots that led to the mortality of seedlings. We found that isolates causing damping-off disease in P. massoniana in China belonged to Fusarium oxysporum, based on morphology indicators and two genetic markers (internal transcribed spacer and β-tubulin gene regions). Symptoms of damping-off were reproduced in all seedlings inoculated with the isolates, and pathogenicity was found to be high. This study confirms for the first time that F. oxysporum is the causal agent of damping-off in Masson pine in China, and our findings will enable the development of more effective management strategies for this disease that causes damage to an economically important tree species.
