Contourite Drifts in the Tartar Strait, Sea of Japan

Abstract Contourite drifts were first detected in the Tatar Strait in the framework of the Sakhalin Slope Gas Hydrates International Project (2012–2015). The number of unconformities observed inside the drifts indicates variations in the hydrological regime and sedimentary supply over at least 1 Ma. Contourite drifts are overlapped by a thin sedimentary layer that covers both the western and eastern slopes of the strait without gaps; this configuration means that, at present, there are no bottom currents strong enough to transport sediments.
