Disulfiram has been used successfully over the last 6 decades in the long-term management of alcohol dependence. The patient taking disulfiram is deterred from consuming alcohol due to the knowledge that its reaction with ethanol (DER) (Brewer and Streel, 2018; De Sousa, 2019). The DER consists of uneasiness, nausea, flushing, chest and abdominal discomfort and can be serious in some cases. Patients who have experienced this reaction rarely would wish to experience the same again (Savas and Güllü, 1997). Patients on disulfiram therapy are known to develop DERs when exposed to either food cooked in alcohol, certain sauces that may have alcohol content and due to excessive use of after shaves or scents that may have alcohol content (Savas and Güllü, 1997). The start of the COVID-19 pandemic saw a sharp rise in the use of hand sanitizers as a means of protection from the virus (WHO, 2009). Most sanitizers have ethanol as their base.
