ABSTRACT

Hydro-meteorological monitoring systems are essential sources of information for designing sustainable water management and developing equitable policies. In this paper we discuss the role of a regional monitoring network in Switzerland, Canton Ticino, and identify a list of challenges and actions to be considered to address future expected issues. The identification is based on a retrospective review of the monitoring network and analysis of the state of the art. Based on our experience, the most critical aspects relate to data density and quality, improvement of archiving and dissemination, modernization of the network for increased quality of service and better interoperability to foster the transition towards an innovative and interdisciplinary water resources management.
