The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the International Scientific Community in the field of the glassy state recently lost one of its most prominent and respected members, Academician Ivan S. Gutzow (31. 05. 1933 ‐ 23. 03. 2020) [1]. Having had the privilege and pleasure to closely cooperate with my mentor, colleague, and very good friend for more then three decades, I highly appreciate to have the opportunity to present here a brief overview on his research activities and achievements. This overview is for sure not complete, so I am concentrating on some of those problems Ivan considered as especially interesting and important.
