The nomenclature of neotropical Manettia reclinata L., type of the genus Manettia Mutis, is reviewed. Without access to a specimen or illustration, Linnaeus compiled the descriptions of the genus and species entirely from correspondence received from Mutis in present‐day Colombia; thus, no original material exists, and application of the name can only be fixed by neotypification. An earlier attempt to neotypify this name on a Brazilian collection was not effectively published. Therefore, an image of this taxon prepared during the Real Expedición Botánica del Nuevo Reino de Granada under the direction of Mutis is more appropriately designated as neotype.
