Abstract The scientific discussion about the spread of the Neolithic into Western Central Europe is usually dominated by analyses of ceramics, chert and archaeobotany. In this discourse, the settlement structure is studied at most as a supplementary source of information, although these data offer a much more direct approach to the question of the formation of the Neolithic as a new way of life. Therefore, the two criteria that were decisive for the selection of the location of the settlements in the Bandkeramik (the natural conditions and the local settlement traditions) are analysed here. This comparison of the settlement patterns of the Earliest Bandkeramik and the LBK provided a new perspective on the formation of Flomborn and thus of the LBK in the strict sense of the word.
