Structural Transformations of sp2 Carbon in the Zones of Seismogenic Faults in Carbonate and Silicate Rocks

The structural states of carbon material (CM) in samples of initially sedimentary marble and shale subjected to carbonization in fault zones and adjacent near-fault areas were studied by Raman spectroscopy. The sequence of irreversible transformations of the CM structure from the initial amorphous state through turbostratic forms to hexagonal graphite mostly localized in shear zones was revealed. With account for the experimental results on simulation of the processes of carbonate carbonization upon its thermomechanical decomposition under the conditions of high-speed shear, it was concluded that the factor of the state of the carbon structure may be used as a diagnostic characteristic of seismogenic faults.
