Analytical Model of Density Currents Arising during the Sedimentation of a Heavy Admixture

Abstract The horizontally inhomogeneous distribution of a heavy admixture in a fluid (gaseous) medium in the field of gravity means the presence of a horizontal component of the pressure gradient force and the appearance of a density current. In the ocean, such currents are sometimes catastrophic; in the atmosphere, they can be significant, for example, in connection with some episodes of atmospheric pollution, precipitation, dust storms, and surface snowstorms. In this work, a linear stationary analytical model that makes it possible to reveal some general patterns of density currents with a heavy admixture settling above a horizontal surface is investigated. The amplitude of the occurring currents depends most strongly on the sedimentation velocity of the particles and the diffusion coefficient of the admixture.
