Welcome to AFO 2020 Book Reviews! Beginning with this issue, we will publish themed sets of reviews. Topic suggestions are welcome! For this issue, I have chosen to review new and recently updated veterinary books or other published media pertaining to (mostly) wild birds. Although many of us would not choose to purchase the more expensive volumes for just occasional reference, being aware of their existence and breadth of coverage, and having a “point person” (author/editor) or publisher to contact for more information on a topic should prove useful. Researchers with access to interlibrary loan, article acquisition, or those at universities with veterinary colleges should have easy access to even the most otherwise inaccessible books.

Our focus on field ornithology as a “big picture” approach to the study of birds may sometimes neglect the obvious—what is the health status of the individuals we are studying? Are there basic anatomical‐physiological reasons why the birds are behaving as they are, or are constrained in their range of responses to environmental changes? Are we unaware of an underlying hormone or pathogen that may be influencing our observational results and skewing our interpretation of the data? The following medically oriented reference books on birds may provide insight into the body workings of the animals we are studying.
