Mental disorders are ranked among the most substantial causes of disability worldwide. Moreover, they are increasingly being recognized as complex diagnostic entities with largely unknown etiological backgrounds. Apart from genetic risk factors, several environmental exposures, including pregnancy and perinatal risk factors, psychosocial stressors, urbanicity, poverty and substance use, have been associated with susceptibility to mood disorders and schizophrenia. It is also of great importance that severe mental disorders are associated with reduced life expectancy, mostly due to cardiovascular comorbidities. At this point, it should be noted that the exact mechanisms underlying causal inferences between certain environmental factors, e.g. urbanicity or seasonality, and the risk of mental disorders are yet to be determined.
