This special issue combines a selection of papers that have been developed, and subsequently peer reviewed, from those delivered at the 9th annual CIBSE Technical Symposium ‘Transforming Built Environments – Driving change with engineering’ that was held in Sheffield in April 2019. As chair of the Technical Symposium, I continue to marvel at the rich variety of research and application that is represented by the diverse and enthusiastic presenters that not only informs but also inspires scholars and practitioners to transform our built environments, and underlying systems, with suitably informed engineering.
