The whitefly transmitted begomovirus Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) spread from the Middle East to become a near global problem for tomato production in the 1990s. This spread is believed to have occurred due to the global trade in live tomato planting material. Recently the important strains of TYLCV, “Israel” and “Mild”, in the Middle East have been shown to associate with the betasatellite Cotton leaf curl Gezira betasatellite (CLCuGeB). Betasatellites encode a potent suppressor of transcriptional and post‐transcriptional gene silencing and enhance virus symptoms and crop losses. The TYLCV‐CLCuGeB complex compromises Ty‐1 resistance, the major part of the arsenal of measures to reduce losses due to TYLCV. The events leading to this situation, the threat the complex poses to global tomato production and the need to urgently identify resistance to the complex are outlined.
