Modern advances in the fields of antennas, propagation, microwaves, millimeter waves, remote sensing, photonics, and many other related sciences have driven the need for highly qualified theorists and practitioners in electromagnetic (EM) engineering. Rapid scientific progress, combined with ever-shifting technological priorities, has created an urgent need to train new generations of EM engineers capable of meeting future challenges head on through a comprehensive understanding of EM. But how do we define this competence in 2020 and beyond, more than 150 years after James Clerk Maxwell published his famous equations? How do we build the crucial competencies in next-generation trainees to drive further innovation? This special issue of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine takes a close look at how educators can approach these questions from a variety of complementary and useful perspectives.
