Totalling 3620 species distributed in 76 genera, Bromeliaceae occupy a wide range of habitats and are one of the most characteristic elements of the Neotropical forests (Holst & Luther, 2004; Gouda, Butcher & Gouda, 2018). Brazil is a country with a long tradition of research on bromeliads, and many scientists in Brazil are devoted to the study of this family of monocotyledons. Since the 1970s, important symposia with a broad participation of experts on ecology, evolution and systematics have taken place in Brazil (Reitz, 1975). As a result, the decision was made to organize another symposium in parallel with an important meeting on monocotyledons (Monocots VI) in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte.
