Galen B. Rathbun died peacefully on 13 April 2019 at his home in Cambria, California, after a brief struggle with the return of a melanoma that had been removed 6 years earlier. Galen was born on 24 June 1944 and grew up in Woodside, California. His father, of English heritage, was an electrical and mechanical engineer who worked for Westinghouse, and subsequently founded his own company, Bearing Engineers. The influence of his father’s engineering background was reflected throughout most of Galen’s professional life, whether it was tinkering with field equipment, constructing radio transmitters, or restoring Model T trucks. Galen’s mother was Mexican–German, and her father and grandfather also were engineers. Because Galen’s mother and sisters all lived close to one another, he grew up in a Mexican matriarchy, with a fondness for fresh tortillas.
