Effect of loudness and spectral centroid on the music masking of low frequency noise from road traffic

Abstract The low frequency noise (LFN) from road traffic is a typical urban environmental noise pollution. It is difficult to be eliminated by traditional noise control techniques. Sound masking has been proved to be an available way to improve the noise perception. This study aims to explore the effect of music masking on LFN from the aspects of loudness and spectral centroid. One music clip, Butterfly Lovers, was separately played on five musical instruments to obtain five masking music sounds. The noise and the masking sounds were combined at the same sound pressure level to prepare the experiment signals. Twenty participants were recruited to evaluate the signals in the annoyance laboratory experiment. Results suggested that lower spectral centroid (SC) and lower equivalent continuous loudness (Neq) benefited the LFN annoyance reduction. The musical sound on harp reduced the annoyance mostly by 53.8%. Both SC and Neq were significantly correlated with annoyance reduction percentage. A relevant masking effect prediction model was established through binary regression analysis in terms of SC and Neq.
