Sorption behavior of water vapor of wood treated by chitosan polymer

This paper examined the potential of reducing the hygroscopicity of pine wood treated with chitosan polymer. Chitosan is considered to be one of the most widely used materials having the major advantage of the existence of modifiable positions in its chemical structure (amino and hydroxyl groups). The Hailwood–Horrobin model was applied in order to determine the sorption isotherms. The analysis revealed that the treatment resulted in a reduction in the hygroscopicity, since the equilibrium moisture content of treated wood was reduced at all relative humidities, which was the case in both total polymolecular and monomolecular sorption. The application of chitosan compound was to reduce total sorption by 23.8%, polymolecular sorption by 20.6% and monomolecular sorption by 35.3% at saturation.
