Accidents will happen: The biosynthesis of bacterial tropone natural products depends on an unusual intertwining of primary and secondary metabolism. Remarkably, a shunt product arising from a “metabolic accident” of an aromatic catabolic pathway serves as universal precursor for tropone natural products.
