(Dec. 5 issue)1 illustrates the importance of the “prearrival care” combination of bystander-initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) by lay responders for the immediate restoration of effective heart rhythm in persons with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, public availability of AEDs is limited, owing to their high cost; the article underscores methods for enhancing accessibility, such as mapping the locations of AEDs or dispatching them by vehicles and even drones.
